Living Once

Last week I was running Beyond That.

This week I am living Once (the movie soundtrack), in preparation for seeing the musical here in Chicago next week.

I saw the movie years ago and it didn’t really do much for me. I appreciated the chemistry the main characters had, who I believe were romantically involved in real life when they filmed it. However, I didn’t really get the story.

My biggest take-a-way was getting to know and love the song Falling Slowly.

When I heard the acclaimed Broadway musical was coming to Chi-town, I had mixed feelings. If I didn’t love the movie, why would I see the theatrical interpretation?

But I really like to see musicals and live theater. Given the wonderful reviews and Tony awards that Once has received, I decided I wanted to give the story another chance.

My parents, especially my dad, are big fans of the movie and soundtrack. So we decided to get tickets together. For the second time in less than two weeks I will get to spend quality time with my mom and dad going to dinner and a musical performance. I am really looking forward to another night out with them.

In the meantime, I downloaded the rest of the Once soundtrack, I only had Falling Slowly before, and have been listening to it every chance I get. I have been surprised by how much the songs are resonating with me. Maybe being further a long in my journey, from when I first heard them in the movie, with more life experience, I am able to appreciate the lyrics more?

Also, as I’ve shared here before, when it comes to movies or musicals, I tend to get more out of them when I am familiar ahead of time with their soundtracks.

Have you seen Once the movie and/or musical?

If so, what did you think?

If not, why or why not?

I thought Once (the movie) was OK. It didn’t blow me away.

But I am a die-hard HIMYM fan, and the woman just cast as the Mother was the original cast member in the Broadway version of Once, and it made me reconsider the play.

I’ll be curious if you like it!
