I watched the Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 Finale on DVR today and realized that it’s been 10 years since Bob and I (who were late to the party) started binge watching the previous four seasons to catch up in time for Season 5 that Fall.

It was something we did together, after Molly was born and died in April that year. I found watching the show comforting and healing after having spent so much time that year in doctors offices and at the hospital as we prepared for her birth and eventually her death.

So many of the characters on Grey’s have spoken to me over the years and I’ve written a handful of previous posts sharing about some that most resonated. However, there is one who’s personality and storyline seemed too hit especially close to home.

April Kepner.

Last night was the last episode on the show for April, played by the amazing Sarah Drew, along with the awesome Arizona Robbins, portrayed by Jessica Capshaw.

April’s OCD, love for planning, rule following (most of the time), and her faith all reflected so much of who I am. When Jackson and April lost their son, in a scenario similar to how we lost our daughter Molly, I was so moved.

I was also heartbroken when I heard, earlier this year, that Sarah and Jessica were both let go/told their storylines would be ending on Grey’s. It was bittersweet to see how the writers chose to end things for them and I think they did an incredible job.

There were a few episodes in particular this season that blew me away, including the finale. I really liked how they chose to send April and Arizona off, though I wish they weren’t leaving the show.

And there was this moment, when Sarah Drew/April Kepner beautifully delivered a line, written by Krista Vernoff (who wrote the episode), that touched me deeply. April’s evolution and openness to change has followed a similar path to my own and thus these words give me hope for the future, as well as confidence in the choices I will continue to make on my journey.

As I’ve done so many times while watching Grey’s, I paused to transcribe the quote, which in turn led me to write and share.

Where ever this find you, I hope that your journey leads you to keep an open mind and heart to possibilities that may come your way.
