When You Get Little

Recently Abby started talking about things she will do, like Mommy, when she gets bigger.

Then she began to tell me about the things I could do when I “get little.”

I think Abby’s idea is so sweet and such an interesting perspective for her to have and share with me.

One day last month, right after bath time, Abby said to me:

“Sometime when you get little you can take a bath and I will hold you!”

Usually after I give Abby a bath, I wrap her in a towel to dry her off and then pick her up to cuddle a bit before getting her dressed. So I think that may have been what she was referring to doing for me someday.

I find this concept fascinating, which reminds me of a story line from the old show Mork & Mindy where they have a son who is born in the body of an older man who grows progressively younger.

For better or worse it’s not that far off from reality, as many older adults end up caring for their aging parents later in life.

If you could get little again, instead of bigger/older, what would you look forward to?

How sweet! We do that with our Abby after bathtime too.

If I got little, I’d love jumping on mom and dad’s king size bed and making blanket forts and being snuggled and rocked to sleep.

Thank you April! Fun to know you have a similar routine with your Abby. 🙂

Thanks also for sharing what you would do if you got little. Blanket forts are the best and I too would love to be snuggled and rocked to sleep.

I love, love, love this. I have to admit that the story Max Tivoli (which explores this idea) scared the crap out of me. Especially since aging backwards, he absolutely knew his death date. But I’d like to be in college again.

Thank you Mel! I need to seek out the story of Max Tivoli, as it sounds familiar, but I don’t think I have read it. I can appreciate that being scary and am not sure if I would want to know my death date if I could. College again sounds good to me too. 🙂

That is so sweet. I love the way she thinks.

I suppose I would like to go back and play. To not have ever conceived of a ToDo list.

And college, too!

This is a great post! I like the way your daughter thinks. If I could get little I would love mandatory naps and having books read to me on demand!

What a sweet thing to say!

If I were littler, I’d probably do the same things I loved when I was little: listening to my Fisher Price record player, reading books in my rocking chair and going on outings with my parents.

I love that idea. I think if I could get little again, I would jump on beds, eat whatever I want without worrying about the nutritional value, and I’d curl up in my mom’s lap again.

I remember Mork & Mindy’s baby! When I get little, I’d love to be wheeled around in the wagon and “tend” my parents’ garden… which really meant eating all the snap peas before they reached the porch!

This is such a darling post. Your little one is so sweet, and yes, since you are raising her so well, I am sure she will be there when you are in need of being “taken care” of. I was caretaker for my MIL after my hubby passed away, It was a blessing to me to do it too. She was a kind woman, and in some ways very child like as she got older. She lived until 94. My parents are in their 70’s so they are ok for now. My husband now has a dad who is 86, and I see that this cycle will be happening soon again. But, with family comes love and worth all of it.
