Dreamers and Realists

Recently Bob and I have been catching up on our DVR watching. We had gotten behind with Modern Family and have watched a half dozen episodes over the past two weeks.

We are almost caught up and especially enjoyed watching an episode from November called “Punkin Chunkin,” which originally aired on the day before Thanksgiving.

This particular show was as amusing and laugh out loud funny as we find most Modern Family episodes to be. However, as this sitcom (with a bit of drama mixed in) does so well, this particular storyline led into a more serious monologue at the end of the show about “Dreamers and Realists” that really spoke to me.

So I did what I often do when I am moved by something I see, hear or read, I try to capture it. Bob helped me to rewind and pause until I had transcribed the whole piece.

This particular quote was delivered by the man who plays Cam on show and summarized so very well why often “dreamers” and “realists” are drawn to each other and make for healthy and balanced relationships.

I know this is the case for my husband Bob and me. I bet you can guess who is the realist and who is the dreamer in our relationship. Though that doesn’t mean that we don’t both have moments when we moonlight and indulge the opposite side of our regular personalities. We believe these differences in personality traits are part of what makes us work well together, though they are also what drives us crazy about each other much of the time.

So here is the quote:

There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not, the opposite is true.

You see the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well, without the dreamers they might never get off the ground.

Do you consider yourself a dreamer or a realist or somewhere in between? If you are in a committed relationship, would you categorize your significant other the same or different than you? Do you agree with the conclusion in this quote? Why or why not?

I think I am both at once, honestly. I think I can do just about everything, and most of the time, I can. 😉

I loved that episode and was so moved by that ending quote. I am the dreamer and my husband the realist.

We take turns. Sometimes I'm the roots and sometimes I'm the wings. Sometimes he's the wings and sometimes he's the roots.

Sometimes it's fun to soar at the same time. That's how we ended up moving halfway around the world for two years early in our marriage.

And sometimes it's fun to root down at the same time. That's how we ended up with two children ;-).

Thought provoking!
