The 3six5 Chicago

in Chicago, Inspiration, Writing

Awhile back one of my good friends from college, who is a successful PR Executive here in Chicago, told me about an awesome project called the3six5. Their tag line is “365 days, 365 points of view.” Each author is supposed to represent a different stage of and perspective on life from around the world on any given day. The posts don’t have to cover major U.S. or world events, though if something happens that is relevant, writers can choose to touch on it. They encourage the authors NOT to chose a day in their life that already holds significance to them, such as a birthday or anniversary. The point, as I understand it, is to get little slices of various people’s day-to-day lives in the form of a short daily journal entry that is not more than 365 words long.

Isn’t that just brilliant?!

My friend also had heard that the two guys who had started it were preparing to roll out a local version here the “Windy City” (since they live here) and she suggested that I apply to be on the author list. I started following the3six5 and on Twitter and Facebook and was hooked! I took my friend’s advice and applied to the3six5 Chicago. I was chosen to participate in the project, which began this month.

Today was “my day” to post! Click here to read what I wrote and to see the picture that I submitted with my the3six5 Chicago entry for July 27, 2011.

For those of you who live in the Chicago area and might be interested in volunteering to take a day and write 365 words (or less) about your life and experiences in or around Chicago on that particular date, here is a link to find out more about how to participate.

For those who live outside of Chicago in the U.S. and abroad, or even if you are local, you can check out this link to learn more about how to apply to be a part of the original the3six5 worldwide version, which is now in its second year and going strong!

Update (8/1/11): Not long after I wrote my the3six5 Chicago post, I decided to apply to be on the3six5 2012 Author List and was accepted! I am very excited to be scheduled for February 29, 2012 (Leap Day)! 🙂

Kathy, that was a great post! I don't remember if I ever told you, but my mom's side of the family lives in Chicago. Though we haven't been back to the city in nearly ten years now, growing up Chi-Town was always like "home base" for us. Given that we moved around so much as a military family, Chicago was as close to a hometown as my sisters and I ever had. I lived there from ages 2-4 and again from ages 5-6/7ish.

My mom was a security guard at the Field Museum and I have very warm memories have having sort-of a "background" pass there. I got to see lots of the stuff they had in storage or in many of the "lab" areas in the back. I remember spending summer days there, too with other kids at camp activities. The best memory is of sitting on the roof of the museum with my mom, other guards, and their kids eating watermelon, spitting the seeds, and watching people strolling the lakefront. Good times. 🙂

Kathy I couldn't leave a comment on your 3six5 post over at the other site, so I'll leave it here instead 🙂

"There is something truly magical about summer camp and I wish that as adults we had more chances to get away from all the busy-ness and stress in our lives to lose ourselves in a game of "capture the flag," have a deep talk with a good friend while going for a hike in the woods or roasting marshmallows over a campfire for making s'mores."

I loved this paragraph. It's so true. I never went to a traditional summer camp – in fact, I never went camping until my mid-20's! But I went to a summer children's theatre camp for nearly 6 years. And every summer, if I happen to be awake and outside at just the right moment, and if the temperature's right – I think to myself, "Man, I feel like I should be going to Summer Stage this morning instead of work."

Excellent slice of life post and thanks for sharing about this amazing blogging project!

I just read the post, it was great – I too, agree that it would be great if we all went back to camp once a year.

Just to remember to stop and smell the roses.

Hope you are having a fantastic summer (Btw, it's Michelle, I'm just using the 'other' blog's sign in right now)
