Perfect Moment Monday: Overheard

I wrote this blog entry over the weekend and had scheduled it to go up early this morning. However, late last night, when I heard the news, it didn’t feel right to me to post it first thing today. I wanted and I needed time to digest it all. In doing so I ended up writing another/newer blog entry reflecting on what has happened and sharing my reaction.

The post includes (and in many ways was inspired by) a thought provoking prayer for peace that a college friend of mine had “retweeted” on Twitter and posted as a status update on Facebook last night. The prayer was written (as a tweet) by one of my friend’s colleagues at the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC).

In light of the mood around the country today, I wasn’t sure if I still wanted to share my Perfect Moment Monday blog entry for this week, however in thinking about the intention of Perfect Moment Mondays, it made sense to me to still post it here. Even in the midst of such historic news events, I believe it is still important for us to be aware of and able to recognize, as well as to find joy in, such perfect moments in our lives. So here it is…

One day last week after school Sean took a pre-homework break to play and watch a little TV in the basement. Abby often likes to hang out and play with (or at least near) Sean during that time. Lately the two of them have been getting along pretty well and so I have been able to get some things done around the house while checking on them periodically.

On this particular day I was in the kitchen and could overhear their conversation while they played, well at least Sean’s end of it. I gathered, from what Sean said, that Abby was playing with her baby dolls and stroller. She enjoys pretending to take care of them by feeding them bottles or sippy cups and walking them in the stroller. At one point I heard Sean say to his younger sister,

Abby you are doing such a good job taking care of those babies. You are going to be a really good baby taker-carer. I mean, you are going to be a really good mother when you grow up!

My heart melted. I thought that was such a sweet thing for my 1 1/2 year old daughter’s 7 1/2 year old big brother to say to her. Definitely a perfect moment for me to witness as a mother. Though I realize that my children may not always get along so well and say such kind things to each other, it was certainly a beautiful thing to overhear.

This picture was taken on Easter Sunday. Abby was tapping her head and telling us that she wanted to wear a hat too (like her big brother Sean). I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to get her one this year, as she loves to wear hats! Next year we will definitely get Abby an Easter bonnet to wear.

Lori from Write Mind Open Heart says that “Perfect Moment Monday is about noticing a perfect moment rather than creating one. Perfect moments can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.” I love the idea of being mindful of and blogging about perfect moments. I know historically I have used my blog more to write about things I am struggling with and though I know that is valid and important for me at times, I appreciate the idea of being intentional about also sharing the simple and very special moments in our lives. Many thanks to Lori for this idea, a wonderful opportunity to focus on what is right in our life, instead of what is wrong.

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the book tour I am hosting here on Four of a Kind (with author participation). The book is called Inconceivable: A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn’t Keep and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift by Carolyn and Sean Savage. You can read more about it and find out how to sign up in this post.

Unfortunately, at this point no one has signed up to participate in this Inconceivable book tour. I appreciate what a busy time of year it is and that many of you who might be interested may not have found time to read the book and/or consider discussion questions about it. If no one signs up for the tour by the end of the day tomorrow (Tuesday, May 3, when the discussion questions are supposed to be due/submitted to me), I will either postpone/reschedule the book tour for a time when it might work better for more people or I may write and post a review of this thought-provoking book by my friend Carolyn and her husband in the near future.

Please comment on this post to let me know if you are interested in participating in a book tour here on my blog for Inconceivable: A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn’t Keep and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift by Carolyn and Sean Savage. If enough people want to do so, I am willing and happy to look at rescheduling. If not, I will plan to do a book review here on Four of a Kind.

Thank you in advance for your input. I was, and continue to be, excited about the opportunity to host this book tour, however I understand that not every project or endeavor we attempt in life (and our blogs) turns out as we intend or hope that it will.

I hope that you have a wonderful week and that you are aware of, as well as able to notice, perfect moments in your own lives.

That is a truly sweet moment between your two children. You can see the way they are treated by their parents by the way they treat each other. Lots of love and encouragement in your home!

I'm sorry that the book tour might be cancelled. I do look forward to your review of the book.

Your perfect moment was lovely. I'm glad you shared it.

I'd happily do the book tour, but I don't have a copy of the book. Let me see if my library has one or I can get one from somewhere.

My heart melted reading what you overheard. So sweet! And, I love the picture of Abby patting her head because she wanted a hat like her big brother – how precious.
